The next morning, calamity ensues for all of the Cooper family, which I won't spoil for you here (although, be warned, the trailer does). In a "Liar, Liar" bit of movie magic, Alexander hits his lowest point at midnight and makes a birthday wish for the rest of his family to know what it's like to have their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

However, while things seem to be going the Coopers' way, in actuality, the dominos are subtly being lined up to topple. Meanwhile, Alexander's mom (Jennifer Garner) is the breadwinner of the family, while his dad (Steve Carell) is a stay-at-home "fommy" (father-mommy). Alexander's older brother (Dylan Minnette) is gearing up for prom, his sister (Kerris Dorsey) for a lead performance in Peter Pan, and his baby brother.

This is all sharply contrasted to the rest of the Cooper family, who are all living the good life at the start of the film.
